Oh the ebs and flows of another Issaquah vs Garfield classic...
Craigh Cornelius fed Jon Matusiefsky to put Issaquah up 1:36 into the game. Drew Snider tied it 12 seconds later. Cornelius finished unassisted half way through the period. Snider tied it just over a minute later. David Campi scored unassisted. Then Cornelius backed up an errant pass to the crease and stuck it to put Issaquah up two. Issaquah controlled most of the quarter, but struggled to find any sort of rhythym on defense and it showed in the 2nd quarter.
Garfield came out hard in the 2nd, scoring 3 unanswered to take a 5-4 lead midway through the period. Campi's second unassisted goal tied it 30 seconds later and the teams were deadlocked at half. Garrett Johnson made 11 first half saves to keep Garfield from a lead.
More back and forth in the 3rd quarter. Issaquah took a 7-5 lead on two great individual efforts from Nick Tierney. Off the opening face-off, Chris Hutchinson was able to kick the ball loose from a pile straight to Tierney. He raced the length of the field and found the back of the net. A few minutes later, Tierney dodged and was stopped, but he spun, planted and ripped a laser to the top corner. Garfield pulled one back before Campi scored the goal of the day. David drove lefty from 'X' and layed out, diving past his defender and the slide for a one handed wrap around. Bulldogs answered with two inside the last 3:30 to tie it at 8 headed to the final quarter. Johnson made 7 more saves in the quarter.
Garfield took its first and only lead of the day early in the 4th as Snider found Rhett Rosella. Issaquah bounced right back... Campi from Cornelius in transition to tie it. Matusiefsky unassisted to take the lead. Snider to tie it. Off the ensuing face-off, Tierney gathered the loose ball and pushed a quick break. He found a cutting Campi to take the lead. A minute later, Issaquah misfired, but Matusiefsky backed it up and found Hutchinson alone on the crease...12-10 Issaquah with 6 minutes to go.
With 4 minutes left, a poor clearing pass fell right in the hands of Snider and he made no mistake. Issaquah's offense killed much of the next 3 minutes, but Jason Montoya reached from his crease, intercepted pass and started Garfield the other direction. Issaquah took a silly penalty with just over a minute left. The man-down unit held and the clock ran out on the Bulldogs.
David Campi rebounded well from his only scoreless effort of the season with the five goals. Garrett Johnson finished with a career high 19 saves. |
